Full Paw Paw Moon

This not-to-be-missed Full Paw Paw Moon will rise Friday, January 10, 2020 as the sun sets. About 530. The Gulf Rim is set for a frontal passage overnight Friday and clouds are moving in as we speak BUT we will celebrate and raise a glass of tart red 3/$20 to the unseen moon and you our friends anyway!

12-10-19 I sent the last FMA off you you guys today and within minutes Eddie B, who is always on the ball and a loyal reader, emailed back with a report of his own. At my mention of being frustrated with my people and their lack of respect for elderly trees and that I plan on planting a Paw Paw patch for Arbor Day on campus.
Eddie wanted to know how big Mr Al was when we moved him (72" DBH), then Eddie moved on to tell me that he ate his first Paw Paw fruit, ever, this fall in Mississippi. Eddie's next news was not so happy, he told me that he lost is dad at Thanksgiving. Eddie declared his dad to be a great woodsman, outdoors man, conservationist, wing shot, and iron sights rifle shot. Quite a man, your dad, Eddie. I know you will miss him. You know what they say Eddie, "the apple don't roll out very far from under the tree".

12-21-19 Winter Solstice! From here on the days keep getting longer! Time to PARTY!
Big family gathering in Lafayette for Christmas. Our kids all there, it was great, food always out of sight. As usual I was not able to speak to everyone, but so nice to be with them all.

How about a fine quote from Shinichi Suzuki:
"I am mentally preparing myself for the five-year-old mind. I want to come down to their physical limitations and up to their sense of wonder and awe."

My grandson Ben gave me this book of poetry Poems of Earth and Spirit by Kai Siedenburg and it made me think of Margaret and David, two poets I know and made me wonder if this is how they write poems:

12-22-19 Son Jake is in so we headed to the 'River", False River, New Roads, to gather up in one place to cook and eat and love and play together. Wild games, too much to drink and eat, Karaoke contests, oh my!

12-23-19 P and I go home to cook and prep for Christmas Eve meal and care for the elderly. We have Christmas Eve singing responsibilities yet each lack a voice with all this sinus stuff. Getting better I hope.

12-24-19 Hen and sausage gumbo ready for after 4pm mass. P's voice still shot so she asked granddaughter Maddie, "Mads the babe", to join her for help singing the harmonies. Maddie is Paula's and Barbara Fairchild's granddaughter so she gots lots of lungs and talent. It was great! So was that gumbo.

12-25-19 YAY, the gang is all here, Merry Christmas y'all, headed back to the "camp" on the River it is actually a big fine home)!

12-30-19 Set New Year Resolutions, hmmmmm, this never works. 1-Meditate/Yoga early each day. 2- Eat right. 3- Exercise (walk, bike, weights). So far I'm not doing too well.
Eight hooter (barred owl)calling gently in the two acre wood as I put the Gurls to bed.

12-31-19 Great fire pit fire with Joe, Kim and Mya and a fine neighborhood fireworks display.

1-4-2020 Since late November I have been watching the SRM (Swamp Red Maple) buds swelling
with the promise of spring. Today on my way to the mailbox I noted my first SRM flowers on the ground. Spring is so close.

1-5-2020 Now this is big y'all, Grace Celeste Garbarino is here. Her birth made so many folks happy. Her mom and dad are favorites and her grandmother Celeste is my sister and I her godfather.

1-8-2020 Headed in to work early, as rising sun shone on the tree line at the rear of a cane field along my route a Red Tail Hawk is sitting on a branch hanging out over the headland. She is looking for a hot bloody breakfast morsel to start her day. The new sun strikes her breast feathers which form a bright white spot in the dull winter landscape. That is why I call them "Headlight Hawks", they shine in the morning light.

Kai S. in her book of poetry has a section titled Poemlets, here are a couple:

Bare feet
on the Earth

Breathing
in and out

Sound of wind
in the trees

Only this...

and this
is more
than enough

next:
I am coming down
from the mountain,

but slowly,
slowly,

and I'm carrying
the mountain
inside me.

Then:
"Shall we dance?"
asked the wind.

"Yes!"
said the trees.

Ha! Great stuff!

Get out, unplug, light up the fire pit, tell stories, jokes (my favorite lately is "laughter is the best medicine unless you have diarrhea", ha!) laugh love celebrate the day and  this Full Paw Paw Moon. Don't forget to bring out the elders and children they will add much to the festivities.

Hey y'all, Arbor Day in Louisiana is January 17, 2020, third Friday in January, get it done! I will celebrate with the gang at the Louisiana State Arboretum, Chicot State Park, Saturday!
