Full Poule Doux Roundup Moon

The Full Poule Doux Roundup Moon rises today, Wednesday 11-13-19, just minutes before sunset around 630. We should have clear skies and grand viewing down here on the gulf rim. It rose fine last night but rises closer to sunset tonight. Saweeeeet y'all.

How about a quote from Albert?

He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.

-Albert Einstein
Amen brother!

10-13-19  I attended the Annual Hominy Hill Dove Slaughter and Protein Feed, put on by a really good bud. I have to admit that I almost never kill doves. BUT we always have a good time y'all. This year the planets aligned perfectly because the President, DT, was in Lake Chuck the night before and this dove hunt and Bar-B-Que is normally attended by lots of guys, mostly guys, government people, land owners, industrialists, research scientists, politicians, bankers and so on, plus a few cowboys and  regular working stiffs like ol BT. There is lots of beer and loud talking, bragging, back slapping and smiling. I always have a good time.
Now this time, with DT having been to town the day before, the more conservative part of the AHHDSAPF were on fire, do you  understand? On fire!
My bud Prairiedog gave me this fine MAPA hat he had made in DT fashion, red with white block letters which say "Make America Prairie Again" a great hat. Did I tell you it is a great hat! When I wear it old guys stop me and say "I like your hat", not because they agree with what it says, but because they didn't read it all and they like what they thought it said! HA!
Then those who did a double take and read it again and said "Prairie??" before they could catch themselves they had to listen to my rant about prairie and why I still had the protest tag on the back. I had much fun with that hat and that crowd! Thank you Dog!
MAPA baby MAPA!

10-20-19  Off to a birthday party for my older child who still makes her children say that she is 43 when I know, or I think I know that she is a bit older, hey, I was there. One day soon I'll do the math and give y'all a report. But y'all, "she look good for her age".
The party was a quiet affair, which is after all, appropriate for someone that old.

10-26-19  Two hummers in the yard on flowers, moving fast like new arrivals, I really think all the Ruby Throats were gone??? I cleaned feeder and put it up just in case we have winter hummers hanging about. That would be so very cool y'all.

David Lee has a new book out, Mine Tailings, I have my copy, do you? Mine is signed by the poet! Can you tell that I'm a big fan?
Speaking of fans, David and I are not big DT fans and he wrote a great 6 word poem on that topic but it is not appropriate for this family rag. So here is another one I liked:

Equinox Nativity

Early sunlight
after a nightstorm

Rainsplatter
on a catspider cobweb

cradling
a baby rainbow

That was a good lead in to my next entry David, thank you.
11-1-19  Fieldtripping with my first-time-freshmen orientation group. Our topic is "Coastal South Louisiana Environmental Issues and Concerns", these 23 freshmen chose to be in my class and expressed their concern that our coast line was being damaged and was washing away. Yesterday my brother Dr John Foret addressed this  group in the classroom, explaining how this loss was happening and why and what was being done about this issue. John also set up the fieldtrip to Rockefeller WMA on Grand Chenier, right on the gulf rim. We were greeted by the Refuge manager Mr. 'Scooter', who, the fine host that he is, showed us the restrooms, then loaded us on a boat and brought to the coast out onto the Gulf of Mexico to see what coastal erosion looks like first hand and what they were doing about it. This was an amazing and graphic illustration. It was very effective teaching tool to use this field trip! Thank you John and thank you Mr. 'Scooter'.
How about a great appropriate quote from Mr. Morgan?

As knowledge increases, wonder deepens.
-Charles Morgan
what about a very cool Margaret poem in honor of the beautiful marsh we saw that day. That we saw washing away and being saved...

Dawn on the Marsh
Dawn on the marsh glows
like embers, like the final flash of a torch
lighting the tiny particles of fog
rising ghost-like and dreamy.
High in the sky
geese line up
to honk their way south
In the distance, deer graze,
tentatively perk their ears
to your sound.
You do not feel the cold
that numbs your fingers and toes
as you click the lens of your camera
whispering a prayer of thanks.
Margaret Simon, draft 2019

As we wandered the chosen path back to campus, our field trip nearly over, in our 15 passenger behemoth van, we headed north towards the interstate passing west of Indian Bayou. At a turn in the road we noticed a Bald Eagle to our left circling low and tight over the end of a crawfish pond, at second glance we realized he or she was herding a group of small black ducks, Poule Doux in the local dialect. As the eagle circled the ducks were panniced into a pile of splashing frenzy, 40-50 birds, the eagle, a juvenile (white head but not the tail) kept dipping in trying to grab one from the pile. What a fine treat to see this, a gift! And the Poule Doux, well they are entitled to a bit of excitement every now and again too. I hope the eagle received its reward also

11-1-19  All Saints Day.

How to Be an Ordinary Saint
Step out of your old shoes and into another's.
Comfort a crying child.
Hold the door open.
Give away your cloak.
Follow a faith-led path.
Pray without ceasing.
Write a poem on a card. Send it to someone who is struggling.
Sing a song of hope.
Pay for someone's coffee.
Read to a child.
Sit with the dying.
Adopt a pet.
Call your mother, father, brother, sister, friend.
Offer a kind word, a knowing smile.
Be open to forgiveness.
Don't linger on pain.
Love.
 Margaret Simon

11-4-19  Ernest Gaines died today, he was 86, I liked what he wrote, a writer in residence at ULL since the '80s. wrote about and from the plantation where he was raised and continued to live.
Ernest's epitaph:
A good man who wrote well.

How about that David Lee? Pretty cool!

David is "in advanced training to achieve his goal of becoming a World Class Piddler". Me too David but I'm beginning to plan my epitaph, the short timer that I am.

11-11-19  Veteran's Day. Thank you Ollie, thank you Dad, thank you Jake, thank you Aunt Da, thank you Uncle Eldon, thank you Uncle Chock, thank you Uncle Lynn, thank you Kenny(one of my students) this quote is for y'all:

You manage things; you lead people.
-Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper

Kenny spoke to my UNIV class on 11-12-19 (he is in it), several of our students made a thank you card and a gift bag with fruit in it for him on Veteran's Day. Very sweet and very cool. Then he spoke about his career in the army. All we had ever talked about was his time in Alaska and his wife and two little kids, but as Kenny slowly developed his story we heard about basic training, Rangers and jump school and Afghanistan and carrying heavy guns and ammo and back strain and helicopters, and a truck accident all of which eventually left him disabled and and discharged and able to come back to school (Kenny was in school in my classes in 2008 but dropped out). This Veteran's day became very personal and emotional and good for everyone. Thank you all!

Get out and enjoy the show tonight, P and I will hoist a glass of tart red to you our friends!

peace love and possumhugs
